Theme: THE ENVIRONMENT - WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT VICTORIA HARBOUR

WHAT THEY SAY ABOUT VICTORIA HARBOUR                                             by Christina Chin 6A

Victoria Harbour,

A gift from Nature,

Is shrinking fast,

Who’s at fault, will it last?

“We’re hungry for land,

Roads, rail links - even sand -

For tunnels, pipes, and another port …

So dredging’s what we support.”

4.4 million cubic metres of spoil

Doesn’t dredging make your blood boil?

“No worries. Dump it at East Sha Chau,

Or South Brothers Island, or Cheung Chau.”

Forget about marine life so dear,

Forget about water, clean and clear,

Let sediments pile up,

Let heavy metals end up in a cup.

What about the sludge and solvents so toxic?

Will they go in the food chain, making everyone sick?

“Development, not conservation, is what will pay.”

Or so the rich and powerful say.
